Speculation has been circulating that the iPhone 5 might borrow much of it’s styling from the current iPad 2. I also believe that this might be the case. Apple would want to look towards moving as far away from the current design of iPhone due to the controversy surrounding its coveted device regarding it’s antennae.
Personally, I think the iPhone 5 will sport a design which has undertones of the original. A ‘bak-to-basics’ design mixed with the ‘look-how-far-we’ve-come’ moniker. The speaker grill used on the iPad 2 (I’m guessing) will make an appearance in the design. IPhone’s want to be gaming devices – and to mix it with the big boys, a superior sound quality experience is required. The grill also would tie their line of products together and further push the identity of the brand into the mind-set of the people (although its not exactly needed due to Apple already being at the forefront of most people’s mind-set). Apple has been looking into using Liquidmetal and has recently hired a Carbon Fibre expert to start exploring the use of light-weight materials in their products. This would drastically improve upon not only their use of recyclable materials (keeping the green-conscious of you happier) but also allowing the products to maintain their rigidity whilst shedding a few ounces. Thinner, thinner, thinner! The iPhone 5 will be thinner. Rivals are already beginning to start producing products in the ball-park of the iPhone 4’s thinness. I know Steve Jobs wouldn’t stand for second best and would push aggressively to maintain their lead in the ‘thin=win’ philosophy they have adopted over the last 10 years. Expect the iPhone 5 to be almost as thin as an iPod Touch. Wow. Bigger screen? Well, that’s debateable but there are rumours of an edge-to-edge design concept floating around the internets, coupled with the rumours of Apple looking at 4 inch screen technology to match rivals in the screen real estate department. I think the number one priority of Apple’s design team would be to increase the display size without losing the already legendary Retina Display, or it’s coveted IPS technology – maintaining the iPhone 5’s stance on having one of the best viewing angles of any product available with a small fruit-shaped logo on the back, possibly even improving upon it to justify it being one of the best. Here is my concept design / prediction. Patent Pending!
